Secondhand Virus Rack XL sound spluttering on and off

Hi

I recently bought a Virus Rack XL secondhand. Unfortunately the sound keeps dropping out intermittently and goes off for long periods - almost like a loose connection - but it does this through both the outputs and the phones socket. The phones socket is also very noisy.

I've tried different midi leads, and tried it without a sequencer. I am suspecting that the internal battery is running out but I may be wrong. Could it be something else?
